2019-2020 Events
Career Preparation Workshop
October 15, 2019
Attendees learned very useful tips on networking, interviewing, LinkedIn, and resume building. Dr. Youssef and Bianca Portal led the resume building seminars, going through how to build an engineering-specific resume and looking over attendees' resumes for them! The mini-seminars lasted about 20 minutes and attendees were able to learn in smaller, more personal groups of three or four. The presentations from the workshop are available below!
2018-2019
E-Fest West
March 15th-17th
Members of ASME went to E-Fest West at the Fairplex in Pomona to compete in the Student Design Competition and the Human-Powered Vehicle Challenge. Our two SDC teams, led by chief engineer Dustin Ybarra, placed 5th and 10th out of 18 teams. HPVC, led by Aaron Eppstein, after overcoming several manufacturing obstacles, placed 15th out of 18 teams, including a strong performance in the drag race events. This was ASME’s first time ever competing in HPVC; it was a great learning experience, and we will be back with a vengeance next year! Beyond the competitions, E-Fest had many different seminars for attendees to learn from, and it was an overall great time for all those in attendance. Two of our members won awards as well! Sonia Goetschius placed 3rd in the Old Guard Poster Competition and Ian Brown placed 2nd in the Altair Design Optimization Competition.
Mentor Night
February 27th
We hosted our annual Engineering Mentor Night, where attendees get to meet with professionals from several different companies in the industry. Professionals from Cohu, Seaworld, Seaspine, Nuvasive, MagCanica, Instrumentation Laboratory, and the ASME San Diego chapter were in attendance. Students were able to talk one-on-one or in small table groups with the mentors, gaining insight on the industry from experienced engineers. Some companies were accepting resumes as well! The event lasted two hours, with both students and mentors staying late because the conversations were that beneficial!
Machining Workshop
January 9th
Members of ASME and AER spent the day learning the essentials of fabricating with Haas CNC, Waterjet, Prototrak, MIG & TIG welding, and the lathe - all taught by talented SDSU SAE members. Over 50 students were in attendance, and over 80 signed up! In order to give students the best experience, we had to limit the number in attendance, but we will be hosting another machining workshop soon!
Ballast Point Factory Tour
October 26th
Officers and members toured the Ballast Point Brewery and learned about the whole beer-making process as well as the engineering behind it. After the tour, all 21+ participants were able to partake in a beer tasting where they were able to take the glass home! Participants under 21 were able to get the glass to take home even without partaking in the beer tasting as well!
FEA Workshop
October 20th
ASME SDSU hosted our fall Finite Element Analysis Workshop, where students were given the opportunity to learn important industry-standard skills about FEA and ANSYS simulation software from an ASME National Chapter member.
Students were introduced to the finite difference method, variational mechanics, FEA, element formulations, and energy methods and proceeded to work with examples from dynamics and heat transfer.

Taylor Guitars Tour
October 3rd
Members and officers attended a tour of Taylor Guitars, where they were able to learn about how guitars are made. As well as the construction of guitars, participants were able to learn about how guitars are engineered in order to produce the sounds we love to hear.
